Richard Dean Smith
March 11, 1994 — September 12, 2023
Richard Dean Smith, 29, passed away on September 12, 2023, at MercyOne Medical Center.
Richard was born on March 11, 1994, in Des Moines to Kent and Pam (Hall) Smith. He attended Lincoln High School before working in various fields. He enjoyed working outside and most recently loved to travel for work. Richard had an amazing and untamed personality. He loved being with his friends and his presence could never go unnoticed. If Richard was there, a memory was made. He had so much energy all of the time, as much as all of his friends' children who referred to him as "Uncle Richard." He was an avid and talented disc golfer and enjoyed playing video games. He had a way of lighting up any room and putting a smile on everyone’s face.
Richard is survived by his parents, Kent and Pam Smith; brother, Mike (Kelli) Smith; niece and nephew Addison and John Smith; grandma, Judy Carter; and numerous other family members and many, many friends.
He was preceded in death by grandparents; Richard R. Smith, Maralyn Hoot, and William “Bud” Hall.
A visitation will be held Friday, September 29, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a time of sharing starting at 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Richard.

Dear Smith family,
I was so sorry to hear of Richards passing. I was one of Richards 6th grade teachers at McCombs. I remember exactly where he sat in my classroom and can still picture his smile. I was a young teacher at the time, and he gave me a run for my money with his energy :) But, he sure taught me a lot, and I remember him with a smile. He was kind-hearted, fun-loving, and sweet. To this day, he is the only student out of over a thousand who got me a small flower bouquet at the end of the year and also treats for our home base class. I wanted to be able to give you this message in person, but couldnt make it on Friday evening. I hope you find some peace in the lasting memories he left with such a wide variety of those lives he touched.
Im so sorry for the pain you must be feeling. You are all in my prayers!
Sincerely,
Sarah Friedrich
