Randy L. Monk
December 01, 1951 — April 10, 2024
Randy Lee Monk, age 72, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at his home in Ankeny.
Randy was born December 1, 1951, in Des Moines, Iowa to Ellis and Geraldine (Cocking) Monk. He worked for Artistic Manufacturing Corporation his entire career, a company started by his father, Ellis Monk, which Randy took over and owned prior to its closing. A second calling for Randy was in design. He enjoyed remodeling and residential construction, and had a great eye for detail. Randy was fond of reading and loved being outside. He could often be found tinkering, collecting cars, or working on a variety of projects which he was notorious for starting. Everything was at Randy’s own pace, and you could depend on him to always take the scenic route.
He is survived by his daughters, Abbey Monk and Maddy Monk (Nicholas Day); sister, Delia “Dee” (Alan) Westphal; lifetime friend, Dawn Thorpe; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. They will forever miss his wit, humor, and compassion.
Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Geraldine Monk; wife, Tracy Vannatta Monk; brother, Tom Monk; and sister, Terry Monk Barr.
A funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2024, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, Iowa followed by burial at Altoona Cemetery in Altoona, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

This is very sad news indeed. I met Randy and Dawn back in the 80s when my ex husband did a teaching exchange with Dawns sister Sandy. The year we spent there Randy was always very generous with his time and he was very kind and supportive to me by letting me stay with him when I was going through a divorce. It’s been many years since I saw or heard from him but I will always have fond memories of him. He was a super guy. I send my condolences to his family and friends. I imagine he will be a great loss to the community.

As a decades long friend and one time brother in law to Randy I have many fond memories of him.
During our high school years we had travels throughout the Midwest including trips to the Indianapolis 500, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Omaha and Lake Okoboji, all unforgettable adventures.
Even though in our later years we had not spent a great deal of time together the bond of friendship lasted well over 50 years and I will miss him. My heartfelt condolences to his family

Somehow we became friends. Such different backgrounds growing up. He, Eli, Jerry, Terry, and Dee always welcomed me to the Monk household. He was a joy to know. Rest in peace my friend. I will forever treasure the good times had. I will forever treasure the pleasure of knowing you.
