Richard “Rick” Earl Johnston, age 64, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Harmony West Des Moines.

Rick was born April 1, 1959, in Des Moines, Iowa to Jethrow Johnston and Ada (McClellan) Johnston. He graduated from Tech High School and from Des Moines Area Community College. He dedicated his career to the auto industry, working in the parts departments of Ramsey Pontiac of Des Moines, Advanced Auto Parts on Easton Boulevard in Des Moines, and O’Reilly Auto Parts in Ankeny. Rick was most recently a resident of Elkhart, Iowa. He enjoyed singing in the quartet, Bound4Him.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Charolette Johnston; step-children, Raymond Ratliff (Lynda), Ronnie Ratliff (Cindy), and Rene Maakestad (Ryan); grandchildren, Christin Richmond (Billy), Ryan Ratliff, Victoria Godfroy (Joe), Nolan Ratliff, and Kaitlyn Tam; and great-grandchildren, Izzy Richmond and Evan Richmond.

Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Ada June McClellan; father, Jethrow “Jeff” W. Johnston; and his step-brother, Jeff Johnston of Arizona.

According to Rick’s wishes, cremation will occur and there will be no services held at this time.
