Phyllis Stegman

Merna “Phyllis” Stegman, 102, passed away October 2, 2025 at Addington Place.

Phyllis was born August 7, 1923, in Orilla, Iowa to Martin and Hazel (Baker) Knouf. She lived in the Des Moines area all of her life and graduated from Lincoln High School. Phyllis was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and Lincoln High Alumni Committee.

Phyllis spent her lifetime going to the Iowa State Fair. She attended her first one at just two weeks old, and her last one at age 100, only missing a couple in-between. Her favorite attraction was the Giant Slide which she rode up until age 94, and her favorite treat was the Wonder Bar.

Phyllis knew what she wanted, and was spoiled by her family. She loved hosting people and had a bougie mindset.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Sheila (Jim) Marlow; grandchildren, Jamie (Stephany) Marlow and Troy (Julie) Marlow; great-grandchildren, Zacharie (Kristin) Marlow, Valerie Marlow, Courtney (Thomas) Lloyd-Adams, and Trinity Marlow; and her four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Bud Knouf and Arlene Macy; daughter, Shelley Pickering; great-grandson, Tristan Marlow; and beloved husband, Tom Stegman.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Phyllis will be laid to rest at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.
