Phyllis Joan Burger, cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2024. Phyllis was born November 4, 1933 to John Victor and Mildred Ellen (Staley) Steppuhn in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was the devoted wife of Wayne Burger for 69 years. Phyllis and Wayne first met through mutual friends while he was in the service and married a few months later in Des Moines, Iowa.

Phyllis was a dedicated follower of Christ and a loving mother to four children. Her unwavering support and dedication to their well-being and education were cornerstones of her life. Known for her infectious laughter and warm presence, she brought joy and comfort to her family and friends alike.

In addition to her nurturing role at home, Phyllis worked alongside Wayne as the Financial Director for Wayne Manufacturing for many years. She was also deeply committed to her community, always ready to lend a helping hand to neighbors and friends. Her influence extended beyond her immediate family as she actively supported her children’s spiritual journeys and ensured they were involved in their church.

She is survived by her husband, Wayne Burger; sons, W. Steven (Marti) Burger and Kenneth Burger; daughter, Peggy (Steven) Klinefelter; 12 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and sister, Patricia Reese.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Mildred Steppuhn and her daughter Penny Sue Burger.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 23, 2024 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
