Patrick James Palmersheim
May 27, 1947 — January 12, 2025
Patrick James Palmersheim, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and tireless advocate for veterans, passed away unexpectedly at his home on January 12, 2025. His sudden departure has left a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him.
Born on May 27, 1947, in New Hampton, Iowa, Patrick was the son of Mathias and Dolores (McGrane) Palmersheim. Growing up on farms with his four brothers and close-knit neighbors, Patrick treasured the memories of his childhood spent in the Iowa countryside.
He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Elma, Iowa in 1965.
Patrick proudly enlisted and served in the United States Air Force for nine years, including two tours in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971, exemplifying his unwavering dedication to his country and his fellow servicemen.
In 1971, Patrick married Loan Nguyen (Sandy), with whom he shared 20 years, raising their children in Elma. During this time, he also served his community in various capacities, including Mayor, City Councilman, and volunteer firefighter. In 2000, he married Cynthia Rae "Cindy" Boor while serving as the County Veterans Affairs Director for Howard County. In 2002, the couple moved to Des Moines, where they spent 14 years. In 2016, Patrick found his soulmate, Susan Wynne Lunning, and they married in 2021. Patrick and Susan shared unlimited laughs, hugs and an abundance of love till his very last day on this earth.
In 2002, Patrick was appointed as the Executive Director of the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs, a role he held with distinction until 2011. He also served as Senior Vice President of the National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs, representing all 50 states and six territories.
Patrick is widely regarded as the "Father of Iowa's Arlington" for his instrumental role in founding the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, a final resting place for more than 80,000 veterans. Over the decades, he received numerous accolades, including the Iowa DAR Medal of Honor, Iowa Notable Veteran recognition, the Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award, and the American Red Cross Hero in the Heartland, among others.
For 17 years, Patrick was the driving force behind Wreaths Across America at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, a cause close to his heart as he worked tirelessly to honor fallen heroes. His dedication to veterans and their families touched countless lives and left a lasting legacy of service.
Patrick's family was the heart of his life. He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Wynne Lunning; his children, Timmothy (Amanda) Palmersheim and Michele (Casey) Knaack; his beloved grandchildren, Emmylane Linh and Lillian Grace Palmersheim, and Anthony Mathias and Mai Loan Knaack; his brothers, Robert (Karen) Palmersheim, Kenneth (Penny) Palmersheim, and Richard (Maru) Palmersheim; Susan’s children, daughter, Angela (Wayne) Conley and her children, Reagan, Aaron and Grace Mitchell Peterson; and her son, Brenton (Kayla) Marcum; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

Please accept my most sincere condolences on the passing of your loved one, Patrick Palmersheim. I have known Pat since 2002 when he was appointed Executive Director of the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs. Those were some challenging years here in Iowa and across our Country as we began deploying service members in support of the Global War on Terror. Scores of Iowans returned injured, and some killed in action. Pat drove to every visitation and funeral, met with every family, and presented a State flag to each. Families of five soldiers with whom I served received a flag from Pat, including Brian Gienau of Tripoli, Seth Garceau of Oelwein, John Miller of West Burlington, Casey Byers of Schleswig, and Robert Briggs of Hillsboro. Pat was wi the out question the right person in the right place at the right time to serve Iowa Veterans during those years. It was during Pat’s time as Executive Director that Iowa passed significant legislation to support Iowa Veterans, including the Iowa Veterans Trust Fund, the Injured Veterans Grant Program, and legislation to establish the Iowa Veterans Cemetery. Pat’s leadership of the Wreaths Across America program will be missed. Pat is known around Iowa and beyond as “The Founder of Iowa’s Arlington”. It is so appropriate that this will be his final resting place. May we all make an effort to be a little bit more like Pat in serving Veterans.

Pat was a good and kind man. During his tenure as IDVA Executive Director, I was a legislative staffer on the Veterans Affairs Committee. He was so dedicated to getting the Iowa Veterans Cemetery established, making it a solemn place of honor, and encouraging all to visit the beautiful, peaceful grounds.
His devotion to "Wreathes Across America" was amazing. I think it was a "bonus" for him to see volunteers of all types and all ages, including kids, gather one weekend each December working together to unload boxes and place what has grown to thousands of wreaths as a tribute to every veteran laid to rest at the IVC.

I am so sorry to hear of Pat's passing. My parents got to know him when he worked at Hy-Vee in West Des Moines and instantly thought of him as a friend.
When they both passed in 2023, he was at their memorial services. They were supporters of the Wreaths across America and we will continue to donate in their honor and Pat's.
May God comfort you and your family at this difficult time.

Timmy and Michele, my heart is so heavy with sadness at the sudden loss of your beloved Dad. I shall always remember him fondly, he was a great man. His friendship has always meant a great deal to my parents and they really cherished him and that relationship. My uncles also thought the world of him. Sending you both, your families, and Susan my love and prayers during this unthinkably difficult time. I'm truly so sorry for your loss. He will always be in our hearts. Heaven got a good one. Earth will never be the same. xo
