Phyllis "Pety" Maine
September 09, 1942 — February 14, 2025
Phyllis Dean Maine (who would only answer to the name “Pety”) passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, February 14, 2025, at Addington Place in Des Moines at the age of 82.
Pety was born September 9, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois to John Wesley and Dorothy LaVon (Pullen) Wilson. She grew up in Des Moines, attending East High School. She was primarily a homemaker and caretaker of her family. She also worked outside the home as a sale associate at Target until she retired.
Pety married Ronald Armstrong in 1959. He passed away in 1976. She then married Charles Maine in June of 1976, and they remained married until his death in 2010. Family was the cornerstone of Pety’s existence and she loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren beyond measure. While she loved her family more than anything in the world, her love of Hobby Lobby was a close second. On any given day, you might catch Pety strolling down their aisles with her sisters or her children on the hunt for a bargain. Her home was filled to the brim with her beloved décor and knick-knacks. If it was red, lit up, or the price was right, it was going home with her.
Pety enjoyed crafts and had just started making bracelets. She loved Christmas holidays and putting up a Christmas tree, or admiring trees that others decorated. She also enjoyed making wreaths. Pety loved traveling and especially winters snowbirding in Arizona. She liked watching murder mystery shows and court drama shows on television.
She is survived by her children, Tracy (Max) Steigleder, Todd (Kayl) Armstrong, Deanna Davey (Pete Ballard), and Cory Maine; stray son, Robert (Kim) Davis; grandchildren, Brandon, Brent, Jordan, Jason, Nick, Tyler, Mariah, Dillon, Amanda, Cory Jr., Cooper, Katie, and Brandalinn; 24 great-grandchildren; sisters, Sondra (Gary) Sacco, Sue McVey (Donnie McGee), and Alice (Dan) Lamb; cuz, Mike Wilson; daughter-in-law, Juli Randa; her bestie, Kathy Jones; and many nieces and nephews.
Pety was preceded in death by her first husband, Ronald Armstrong; second husband, Charles Maine; son, Ronald Armstrong; parents, John and Dorothy Wilson; and her brother, Ray McAfee.
There will be a celebration of life in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to Addington Place in Des Moines in appreciation of their compassionate care of Pety.
