Phon Kem, age 68, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 14, 2025, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Phon was born on February 5, 1957, in Svay Rieng, Cambodia, to Mao Kem and San Mom. A survivor of the Cambodian genocide, Phon endured unimaginable hardship before finding refuge in the United States in September 1981, where he rebuilt his life with resilience, quiet strength, and deep love for his family.

He worked as a janitor for Des Moines Public Schools until his retirement, known for his work ethic, humility, and gentle nature. Outside of work, he found joy in the simple things—riding his lawnmower, watching food videos on YouTube, cracking jokes with loved ones, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren, who were his greatest delight.

Phon’s journey from survival to stability was marked by quiet perseverance and unwavering devotion to those he loved. His life was a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the healing power of family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marino Mom; his children, Samath Kem and Phanna Kem-Thongsoum (Jack Thongsoum); his adored grandsons, Enzo, Jackson, and Luca; and his sister, Sovann Kem.

Phon is preceded in death by his parents, Mao Kem and San Mom; his brothers, Chhun Kem and Lap Kem; and his son, Samoeun Kem.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, with burial to follow immediately at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Phon Kem’s memory lives on through the legacy he leaves behind—a story of survival, strength, and love that will forever be cherished by his family and all who knew him.
