Nicholas Anthony Iaria
February 22, 1940 — January 09, 2024
Nicholas Anthony Iaria, 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 after a short but hard-fought battle with cancer surrounded by his four children.
Nick was born on February 22, 1940 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was the third of four children of Paul and Rose Iaria.
After graduating and playing football for Dowling Catholic School he went on to study and also play football for Simpson College in Indianola; he also served in the armed forces.
Nick was predeceased by his sister Joanna Schmeling (Richard) and is survived by brothers, Paul Iaria (Barb) and Michael Iaria (Charlotte). He also leaves behind his 3 daughters, Kathleen Iaria, Christine Maxwell (John), Jennifer Barcus and his son Nicholas Iaria II as well as grandchildren, Jack, Maddie, Andy Maxwell, Jacob Barcus (Emma), Collin Barcus (Crystal), Gianna Iaria, Ty Rethmeier and a great grandson Jaxon Barcus.
Nick was a devoted man to his church, St Anthony’s where he happily and faithfully served. Our dad found the most joy from volunteering and helping others. He was a member of Knights of Columbus for over 40 years and was a fixture at Saint Anthony’s church for many years helping to open the church, setting up events and working playground duty where the kids considered him “grandpa” and was a volunteer at Dowling Catholic School for several years as well.
Our dad loved watching Notre Dame Football, and playing cards with the boys. Christmas was his favorite time of year; while he enjoyed the gifts we gave him it was the marshmallow fudge he loved the best-dad had quite the sweet tooth.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Anthony’s Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Road in Des Moines on Friday, January 12, 2024 at 10 am. He will be laid to rest at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anthony’s Church or School.

Nick was a very fine Catholic gentleman, of which the world is in short supply.
I know he was a "pillar" @ St. Anthony's all his life & I know he will be praying for us in Heaven.
My thoughts and "poor prayers" for Nick & all his family, in this time of great sorrow.
