Maurice Smith

Maurice Smith, 89, passed away on June 23, 2025 at Trinity Center at Luther Park.

Maurice was born April 21, 1936 in Granger, Iowa to Wade and Mary (Stump) Smith. He retired from the Des Moines Public Schools, where he had been a custodian for many years. He enjoyed volunteering at Lutheran Hospital. Maurice liked watching TV while enjoying his popcorn. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Maurice was also an avid runner and participated in several of the Dam to Dam runs.

Maurice is survived by his children, Wade (Julie) Smith, JR Smith, Christie (Scott) McConathy, and Margaret (Charles) McKinney; grandchildren, Mike Norris, Ben Norris, Chad Norris, Tracy (Brett) Levang, Todd Smith, Aaron Smith, Patrick (Alex) Smith, Danielle McKinney, and Nicole (Tomas) Garduno; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Christina D’Ostilio Smith; brother, LaVerne Smith; and his parents.

The family will greet friends Sunday, June 29, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A graveside service will be held Monday, June 30th at 1:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
