Mary May Van Gorp

Mary May Van Gorp, 75, passed away on October 19, 2023, at Harmony Care Center in West Des Moines, Iowa. An open house to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at her granddaughter, Ashley’s home in Indianola.

Mary was born October 2, 1948, in Des Moines, Iowa to Marcia and Earl Erickson. She graduated from Polk High School in Polk City, Iowa, and began working for Younker’s Department Store where she met the love of her life, Donald Van Gorp. The couple married on June 15, 1968, and had three children, Ann, Erica and Matthew.

Mary enjoyed animated movies, The Sims, and playing video games. She most enjoyed spending time with her family and especially loved camping out in the camper with her granddaughters and her favorite pets, Sassy and Sophie. Mary also treasured joining her friends at Perkins to visit over a cup or two of coffee. And of course, she loved her many pets throughout her life, especially her cats.

Mary is survived by her children, Ann Martin and Matthew Van Gorp; granddaughters, Tiffany (Troy) Stanley and Ashley (Dustin) Allen; great-grandchildren, Levi Stanley, Avah Allen, Autumn Stanley, Tristan Allen, and Raelynn Allen; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Van Gorp; her daughter, Erica Van Gorp; son-in-law, David Martin; siblings, Frank Erickson, Phyllis Lovell, Marcia Van Zitteren, Bob Erickson, and Jim Erickson; mother-in-law, Georgia Van Gorp; father-in-law, Clarence Van Gorp; and brother-in-law, Richard Graham.
