Mary Lou Gunderson, 93, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2026.
Mary Lou was born on August 7, 1932, in Rockford, Illinois. She is one of two children born to Helen and George Tullock. She spent her childhood enjoying her time in school and at the Rockford Country Club. Mary Lou graduated from Rockford High School before beginning her college journey at the University of Illinois and later transferring to Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. After graduating from Rollins with a degree in Mathematics, Mary Lou was one of the first women hired to program computers at General Electric Company, based in Schenectady, New York.
Mary Lou will be remembered for her love of family and community. She was an active member of the Eldora Community Garden Club for many years. She was also involved in the retail community, working with The Yarn Shop and The China Shop, both of which were located in Eldora's main square.
Mary Lou and Bob, her husband of 69 years, were involved in a variety of community service organizations and environmental efforts, culminating in the protection of the Iowa River Greenbelt area for future generations to enjoy. This 42-mile stretch of the Iowa River Valley connects to Pine Lake State Park, Calkin’s Nature Center, and other parks and historic places. Mary Lou was also very interested in local and state politics which she actively engaged both as a promotor of policy and supported of various aspiring politicians.
Upon retirement, Mary Lou and Bob spent 14 years in Tucson, Arizona. They enjoyed walks in the desert and the community of many friends they made while living there.
Mary Lou is survived by her daughter, Sigrid (Lane) of Charles City, Iowa; sons, Joe (Mary Pat) of Ketchum, ID, Bill (Laura) of Boulder, Colorado, and Jim (Jody) of St. Louis, Missouri; as well as 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and George Tullock; brother, Dr. Gordon Tullock; and her stepfather.
Mary Lou will be missed by her family and many friends from Eldora, Tucson, and Des Moines.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mary Lou’s memory to the Iowa River Greenbelt through the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation.
