Mary Bennett

Mary Jean Bennett, 73, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2024 at home under hospice care surrounded by her husband and four children.
She was born January 5, 1951 in Omaha, Nebraska to her parents, Clement “Pete” and Jean O’Meara. Mary was a registered nurse at Mercy medical center and Iowa Heart for many years. She was also a member of All Saints Catholic Church.
Mary’s pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. She was also proud of her Irish heritage. The grace and dignity in which Mary traveled her life was inspiring. She will be remembered by her strength and humor.
Mary is survived by her loving husband, Jay Bennett; children, Matthew Bennett, Sarah (Mark) Bennett, David (Stefanie) Bennett, and Anne Cox; grandchildren, Caden, Josiah, Eli, Lola, and Oliver; siblings, Stephen (Val) O’Meara, Lynda O’Meara, Kathy McIlhon, Nancy (Bob) Caylor, Kevin O’Meara, Brian O’Meara, and Chad (Julie) O’Meara; and her beloved dog, Bella.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clement “Pete” and Jean O’Meara.
Family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2024 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Mass of Christian Burial will take place the following day, Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, 650 NE 52nd Avenue in Des Moines with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, 1 NE 60th Avenue in Des Moines. The Mass of Christian Burial will be livestreamed and the link will be posted at the end of this obituary on the day of the service.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Mary was my first boss at Mercy, hiring me in 1978. I will always remember her kindness. Our sympathy is with your family.

Mary, "the good Mary", (I was the bad Mary in the hospital) I am proud to have known and worked with! Such a caring and fun loving nurse, with a great sense of humor, we all loved.
