Mary Ann Nessen
November 28, 1943 — January 16, 2024
Mary Ann Nessen, 80, passed away January 16, 2024 at Indianola Westview Care Center. Per her request, no services are planned.
Mary Ann was born November 28, 1943 in Indianola to Guy and Virginia (Frazier) Chumbley. She graduated from Indianola High School and became a flight attendant for Braniff Airlines based out of Dallas, Texas. A dream job for a young woman from a small Iowa town. She was introduced to Bill Nessen through a friend and the couple later married. Many unforgettable memories were made when the family moved to Kona, Hawaii in the mid 80’s, where they owned and operated Nessen’s Liquor and Deli. They later returned to Iowa. Mary Ann loved being a wife, mother and “Nanny”. She enjoyed working in the yard and in the beautiful flower garden that outlined their acreage. Mary Ann and Bill had a circle of friends that they remained close with throughout the years. She retired from US West Communications after 20 years of service where she was a sales and service consultant.
Mary Ann is survived by her children, Melissa Bonanno and Ryan (Tamara) Nessen; grandchildren, Samantha Bonanno, Nicholas Bonanno, Derek Einertson and Jonathan Nessen and many lifelong friends.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer Nessen-Wilson; brother, Dan Chumbley; and her beloved husband Bill Nessen.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Indianola Westview Care Center and Suncrest Hospice for the wonderful care and compassion Mary Ann received.

Dear Nessen family.
My life has entertwined with your family most of my life. I knew your Dad and uncle Mike at Lincoln High in the 50s, then was neighbors with Mike and your Grandparents Chumbley in the 60s. My former husband, Bob Ogden, worked with Guy Chumley at Randleman Realty. I met MaryAnn in the early 70s when we were neighbors in Magnolia Park. She and I became fast friends. MaryAnn was a real lady and I admired her as a wife & mother. Her days as a stewardess became part of her and showed in the way she treated people.
I will be forever greatful to her for teaching me to use mascara and daily moisturizer. Rest in peace my friend.
