Martha Squire

Martha Jane Squire passed peacefully on December 18, 2023 in Des Moines, Iowa. She was born to Polly (Hansen) and Henry Dloughy on Dec. 10, 1928 in Waterloo, Iowa, where she and her younger brother Robert grew up.

Her early years gave her an independent mind, a deep sense of fairness, and a fierce loyalty to her principles. She treasured celebrating her Danish heritage at family reunions and learning to play the trumpet.

She graduated from Iowa State University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Art. After graduation, she worked as a staff artist for WOI-TV in the pioneering days of educational television. She met her future husband John Robert Squire while at Iowa State, where he was the waiter at her residence hall dining room. They married on Dec. 27, 1955, the launching of a partnership and deep love that lasted through all the seasons of life.

Martha delighted in growing things. She took deep pride in her children, Debra and Mark, tended flower gardens and young trees, taught third-graders the wonder of God's love, and helped others discover their own gift for teaching.

Trained as a teacher, Martha shared her knowledge of art and sewing joyfully with youth and adults alike. Her second career as a Christian educator grew from dedication to God, her love of
children, and her desire to make a difference for people. Martha was deeply committed to her church as a place of safety, welcome. and spiritual nurture.

Martha sought beauty in all things. Her artistic sense graced the meals she prepared, the celebrations she planned, the home she created. She valued deep friendships and moments of quiet reflection. She took time for people, sharing tears and laughter alike. She experienced life intensely and faced challenges bravely.

By the example she lived and the efforts she has made, Martha Squire has touched lives and shaped spirits. She is missed by her husband, John; children, Debra (Gordon) Dietzman and Mark Squire; and many friends, co-teachers, neighbors, and visitors who shared her warm hospitality.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 8, 2023 at Grace United Methodist Church, 2700 Cottage Grove Avenue in Des Moines, Iowa.
