Marilyn Sampson (1955 - 2024)

Marilyn Kay Sampson, 69, passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines after a battle with kidney failure and heart disease.

She was born August 5, 1955 in Des Moines, Iowa to Benny and Joyce (Richardson) Palmer. Marilyn was raised in Des Moines and graduated from Hoover High School in 1973. On March 2, 1979 she was married to Timothy C. Sampson, also from Des Moines. They raised two children; Amber and Stacey.

Marilyn earned an Associate’s Degree in Accounting from Des Moines Area Community College. She was employed with Shelter Insurance and Medical Billing Services until she retired in 2015. After retiring, she opted to help her daughter, Stacey, open her veterinary practice, and worked as an HR manager at Heart of Ankeny Animal Hospital from 2016 until 2020.

Marilyn loved spending time with her family and her 5 grandchildren. She loved short outings to go shopping, or out to lunch/dinner. She would often organize Sunday breakfast for the family to get together followed by afternoons spent at TJ Maxx. She loved to buy shoes, a love she has passed on to both her daughters, and 4 granddaughters. She also loved arts and crafts. Whether it was crocheting hats/mittens or blankets, making jewelry, ornaments, or t-shirts, she was always creating things to give to others.

She enjoyed supporting her grandchildren in all of their sporting events and activities. She never missed an opportunity to cheer them on in whatever they were participating in. Her favorite place to support was at the softball field. She loved watching her grandkids play, and watching her daughters’ coach. She was a season ticket holder for the NCAA Women’s College World Series and enjoyed going when she was able.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Tim Sampson; her daughters, Amber (Nick) Salmon and Stacey (Bo) Munger; five grandchildren, Megan Salmon, Tommy Salmon, Sarah Munger, Emma Munger, and Lucy Munger.

Family will greet friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Memorial Service will begin at 2:00 p.m. also at the funeral home.
