Margaret Marie Hartner
October 14, 1932 — July 12, 2024
Margaret Marie Hartner, 91, passed away on July 12, 2024. Services will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison Avenue in Des Moines, IA on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. Family will greet friends following the service. Burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery.
Margaret was born on October 14, 1932 in Clinton, MO to Iva (Wilson) and Carl Duerr. She graduated from Clinton High School and then from the University of Missouri at Columbia with her Bachelor’s degree in teaching. She married Elmo Robert Hartner on December 30, 1958 and the couple moved to Kansas City where Moe worked for Standard Oil. Margaret taught school as they moved from Kansas City to St. Louis to North Platte, NE where they adopted their beloved daughter, Pamela in 1969. The next move took the family to Urbandale, IA in 1972. Here, Elmo and Margaret bought into Bosselman/Hartner Truck Stop in Altoona, IA. In addition, Margaret ran Quik 6 in Altoona. After Elmo’s death in 1991, Margaret continued to run the truck stop, surviving a fire and two robberies. She retired in 1994.
Margaret was an avid traveler, having traveled all over the United States, many places in the Caribbean and Mexico, and widely around Europe. She was also a dedicated golfer, having achieved a hole in one after her retirement.
Margaret was also a devoted volunteer and faithful member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, a volunteer at Iowa Methodist Hospital, and a member of PEO Chapter KO.
This kind, sweet lady with strength of steel will be greatly missed by her daughter, Pamela (James Bushell) Hartner. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.

Dear Pam and James: We are sending our love and condolences, during this difficult time. Losing a parent is harder than we ever could have imagined it to be. I’m certain your mom was so grateful and proud that you were able to be with her in her final years.
The service was beautiful, be gentle with your tender hearts as you learn to walk through this world again, in a different way.
Rest well, Mrs Hartner, and know that you were loved.

Dear Pam,
Roger and I send our deep sympathy to you. Our lives seem to shift when we lose a mother or father. I have fond memories of you and your parents. They were always there for you, and made the trip to Aspen, CO. to celebrate our wedding. That was in 1990! After Northwestern, you lived in Aspen for several years and we'd connect over a shared dinner. But, we have lost track of each other during the last several decades. Roger and I spend the winters in Scottsdale, AZ and the summers in Iowa. Life is good - we are both healthy and still enjoy all life has to offer - friends, family, travel, etc. I heard you live in the Pacific Northwest but not much more.
We have a commitment to celebrate a friend's 98th birthday on Thursday morning, so I can't attend Margaret's funeral services. If you have a few open minutes, I would love to connect over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine while you are still in Des Moines. My phone number is 515-865-4383 and email is sricher@newdoextra.com. Once again, please accept our condolences - this is not an easy time for you. Fondly, Sunnie and Roger
