Service Details

Madeline Rose (Chance) Clay went peacefully to be with the Lord on Monday, October 16, 2023 at her home at The Villages in Marion, Iowa.

She was born March 15, 1936, the daughter of Lester and Edith (Butler) Chance. She was the second of four children. She graduated from Earlham High School and went to work as a teller at Brenton Bank until her retirement.

She married Joe Clay, April 14, 1956 and they had three beautiful daughters, Cindy Jo (Gustafson), Pamela Rose (Elliott), and Jenny Lee (Crawford). She lived in Des Moines for most of her life until 2015 when she moved to Cedar Rapids to be closer to her daughter Jenny and family. Madeline was witty and had a great sense of humor, which lended her to being well liked and easily making friends wherever she was. She had many talents and hobbies including tending to her beloved gardens and indoor plants; she was skilled with a sewing machine, creating curtains and table covers for decorating, which she did seasonally. In recent years, she had also become very proficient in coloring, taking it from merely a hobby into works of art with perfect shading and blending to make the pictures almost life-like. She found great strength in her faith and love of her family.

Madeline is survived by her daughter Jenny and son-in-law Norm Crawford, her sister JoAnn Marks, and many grandchildren, Angie (Joe) Kopish and Mindy Jo LaHay of Cedar Rapids, Ashley Cairo, Troy (Carly) Cairo, Cindy Flinck, and Chelsie Elliott (Michael Brunsvold) of Des Moines. Several great-grandchildren Nathan Hansen, Trenton Kopish; Elizabeth and Gunner Schultz; Mary and David Cairo; Kylie and Lilly Flinck; and Khloe and Michael Jr. Brunsvold.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe Clay, beloved grandson Tyler Jo, daughters Cindy Jo and Pamela Rose; brother Leonard ‘Butch’ Chance and sister Dorothy Lamb.

Grave-side service and burial will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.
