Luella Floden
July 02, 1937 — October 29, 2023
Luella Floden, 86 passed away from complications of Alzheimer's disease on October 29, 2023 in Ames, Iowa. She was born on July 2, 1937 to Charles and Lucille Hanrahan.
Luella’s greatest joy in life was spending time with her family. Throughout the years, she and husband Ted hosted many family Sunday dinners, extended family Christmas Eve parties, countless baby and wedding showers and her favorite of all-Christmas. She was a lady through and through, never saying a bad word about anyone and always offering help, hugs and love. She was an angel that walked the Earth who has now gone home to spread her wings.
For nearly 50 years, Ted and Luella were involved in round dancing, and were inducted into the Iowa Caller Hall of Fame in 2008. During those years, they would sometimes spend two to three days a week at round and square dances and even had more than a few dances at “Floden Hall”- the building behind their house. Luella was well known for her beautiful hand-made dresses and costumes.
Luella worked for the Des Moines Public Schools for many years. She first worked in the kitchen and then at the bus garage as a bus driver and route specialist. Everyone who rode Miss Lu’s bus will remember her signature hairstyle, smile and kindness. She finished her working life driving the bus for Christ the King Catholic School.
Luella is survived by her husband of 67 years, Lester (Ted) Floden; her much loved children, Mike Floden of Des Moines, Kevin Floden (Heather Hall) of Ames and Marjorie (Bob) Graham of Indianola; daughter-in -law, Nancy Floden of Altoona; 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers, Charles (Ruth) Hanrahan and John Hanrahan of Des Moines; many nieces and nephews and friends.
Welcoming her into Heaven are her parents, brother, Jim, daughter-in-law, Sue, niece, Amy and son, Brian.
Visitation will be Tuesday, November 7, 2023 from 6-8pm with a Prayer Service at 7pm at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th St. in Des Moines. Funeral mass will be held at 10am Wednesday, November 8th at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th St. in Des Moines. Private burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Cemetery near Cumming.

I was a lucky person to be able to meet Ms. Lou during the time she was here at CTK. She always had a smile on her face. May the Lord embrace her on his arms. My deepest sympathy to all the family.

Ted, Margie, Mike, Kevin, Nancy, and families,
Sending my heartfelt sympathies at this sad time. Over the years Luella celebrated and hosted many life events with us.
To me, one of the best things in life are the memories we make along the way. A few of mine of Luella include her signature hairstyle, summers at the lake in Minnesota boating when we were young, family Christmas Eve celebrations, playing hide n seek and sledding in the alley at Thanksgiving time at their house on Virginia and her laugh. She was kind with a good heart and knew the right words you needed to comfort you.
May the celebration of a life well lived bring peace to you all.
May she RIP and the perpetual light shine upon her.

There are those people who just make the world a better place, and that was Luella. She had such grace and kindness. We worked together at DMPS Transportation Department for many years. She was a very wise woman and I enjoyed the talkes we use to have. I sure missed her when she retired. My deepest condolences to her family. She was one in a million!!!

This makes my heart ❤ sad 😢. Luella was such a great lady with a golden heart. She was my trainer with DMPS. (Several yrs ago) She was calm cool and a great teacher. She took me to the fairgrounds and had me back into a small place with that big ol bus with only a few inch on each side she said oh my with a small giggle 🤭 when we were done were in to wrong spot but good job you 😝. I only remember her having her hair down once. I was surprised how long and beautiful it was. She explained how she cared for it. When it was up there was never a hair out of place. She will sorely be missed she truly was one of the Lords shepherds. RIP My condolences to family and all her friends
