Leona Mae (Carpenter) Bailey was born on September 10, 1932, as the third child of four children to parents Wendel and Ruth Carpenter. Leona graduated from Farrar high school in 1950 where she played basketball. She then worked for a short time in Des Moines before getting married to Jack Bailey on January 20, 1951. Leona and Jack raised seven children on their farm north of Mitchellville. She was also a member of the Red Hat ladies’ group. They enjoyed visiting with friends and family, camping, fishing in Minnesota, and attending Bluegrass music festivals. They traveled to Europe, Australia and New Zealand as well as participating in several cruises. Leona worked for the state of Iowa and retired in 1996.

Leona is survived by children Chris (Judy), Brad (Nancy), Kathy (John), (Patricia), Becky (Mark) and Blaine; 20 grandkids, 46 great grandkids and 24 great-great grandkids.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband Jack, two sons David and Scott, a daughter-in-law, Debbie, her parents Wendell and Ruth and siblings Norma, Lyle, and Gerald.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday November 6th, 2024, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, November 7, 2024, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 302 E. Howard St. Colfax.

Leona will be laid to rest in the Franklin Township Cemetery.
