Larry Ray Sly
October 14, 1956 — April 15, 2025
Larry Sly passed away on April 15, 2025, with his family by his side. His departure leaves countless friends and family members dispirited, but cherishing many memories.
A leader for inclusion, kindness, and good times, Larry welcomed all into his sphere. In tragedy, sadness, or joy he was the “show up” guy with casseroles, cookies, and adult beverages. His comforting hugs could diffuse despair; while his engaging sense of humor could bend a crowd into belly laughs.
Yes, Larry certainly was the entertainment initiator, always costume ready, first on the dance floor, a practiced karaoke performer. He could delight a crowd with a recent cautionary tale, golf with determination, spontaneously organize a gathering, sweep in the new year, arrange a birthday hay rack ride, host backyard bar-b-ques, welcome babies, embrace old souls. We all have stories of Larry shenanigans; and we all honor how he conducted his life with hospitality, presence, and compassion.
In his professional life, Larry appreciated the challenge of assisting people in their search for a home. He sold real estate for 48 years in the Central Iowa area. Larry’s first mode of transportation in the business was by motorcycle. He served on the Greater Des Moines Board of Realtors and was honored as “Realtor of the Year” in 1995.
In 1983, he became the Chapter member of the South Des Moines Jaycees. Forming even more friends and building real estate client relationships.
Larry married Toni Aldrich in 1981. Together they forged an exceptional union of devotion to each other and affirmation of mindfulness for the needs of others. Toni passed away September 2023. He also was preceded in death by his parents, Francis & Ardis Sly, along with brothers Gene, John and Doug.
He is survived by step son Eric Schroeder; siblings, Lee Sly (Bernice), Sheryl Schmitt, Feryl Bouchard (Ron), Ken Sly, Bob Sly, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family asks in lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Larry may be made to the family to honor his legacy.
Family will be greeting friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 21, 2025, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home; 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at the funeral home.

Prayers for Larry's family. I met Larry back in 1983 when he joined the SDM Jaycees. Was very impressed with his 'can do' attitude. I moved away in 85 so I lost touch with him but did find him last summer and exchanged a few emails. RIP Larry. Mark, Clive Jaycees

Thoughts and prayers to the Sly family on the loss of Larry. I met Larry through the golf group he played in. Larry's Bloody Mary's to start the golf round were second to none. His humor lit up a room and had us all in tears from laughter many times. He will be missed greatly by his golfing comrades. RIP Larry Sly.

My heart is sad on the passing of my friend of 40 years. Lived next door to him, Toni, and Eric for several years. So many good memories of our neighborhood and even after we all moved. Praying people keep Eric in their prayers as he begins this chapter in his life. RIP my dear friend.
