Larry Coughennower
January 23, 1943 — October 25, 2023
Larry Coughennower, 80, passed away October 25, 2023, in Norwalk, Iowa surrounded by family.
Larry was born on January 23, 1943, in Ames, Iowa to Bruce and Evelyn (Partlow) Coughennower. He was one of five boys that were raised on his grandparent’s farm in Cumming, Iowa. Hard work was a common theme growing up and Larry didn’t miss a beat, a few years after he graduated from high school, he joined the United States Army. For two years of his term, he was stationed in Germany, and it was there that he met his future wife, Ursula Klein.
Larry and his wife settled in Norwalk, Iowa and he went to work for United Airlines where he held many roles, from fueling airplanes to working the ticket counter. During the summers, Larry and Ursula, and their two boys would enjoy camping at Cutty’s Campground. After 37 ½ years with United Airlines, Larry retired and moved to Arizona with Ursula to enjoy their newfound freedom.
He didn’t know a stranger and would love to tell anyone who would listen about his life in Iowa and specifically his adventures with United Airlines. He loved spending time playing cards, drinking margaritas, and socializing with his friends in Pine Top, Arizona in the summers. When he would come back to Iowa, he loved visiting with his grandkids and searching for the perfect tomatoes to make bacon and tomato sandwiches with sweet corn!
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Kevin (Tabitha) Coughennower of Norwalk, Iowa; grandchildren, Justyn (Alyssa) Coughennower of Norwalk, Iowa, Aaron (Payton) Coughennower of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Ashley (Alexis) Coughennower of Bondurant, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Eli and Mia Coughennower of Norwalk, Iowa, and beloved family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Ursula Coughennower; and son, Craig Coughennower.
Funeral services will be held at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines, Iowa on Friday, November 3, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., with visitation prior, starting at 9:00 a.m. A burial will take place following the service at Norwalk Cemetery in Norwalk, Iowa.

So very sad to hear of Cousin Larry's passing. His FB posts kept us all alert and frequently laughing. He and my Brother Tom would gang up on me, since I was the youngest. Something that I grew to miss when they went into the military. Since then we have enjoyed all of our connections through family meals, a round of golf. and even a beer or two. He will be missed. Hugs and condolences to the family.

Stone and I were sorry to hear about Larry's passing. I have always enjoyed his posts on Facebook and chances to catch up when we were both in Iowa. Days/weekends spent on the farm were (mostly) fond memories. He will be missed.

So sorry for your loss. I went to school with Larry and we always waited each new school year to see how our new teacher would pronounce his last name! We usually managed to get a chuckle from it. I know his family and friends will miss him. I will miss his comments on Facebook as we posted back and forth. Again, my condolences.
