Service Details

Lois Eileen Shivers, age 69, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, April 10th, 2025.

Lois Hanson was born in Hankinson, North Dakota. Before her birth, Wilbur and Bernice had six boys. Bernice was practical. Since she had all boys clothing, she thought it would be just as easy if she had another boy. Bernice’s mother gave her a dress in case she had little girl. When Lois was born, cousin Marie told the boys that they had a baby sister. The boys all ran off to tell everyone the news, “It’s a girl!” They have always been proud of their little sister.

Wilbur’s work with the Great Northern Railroad led their family to relocate several times. Lois spent many of her formative years in Chokio, Minnesota. Lois graduated from Chokio Alberta High School in 1973. She went on to earn her Bookkeeping Certificate from Pipestone Area Vo-Tech Institute. In an office education contest among more than 600 students, Lois took 1st place in the state and 5th place in the nation for best extemporaneous speech. She took her first accounting job at American Hoist, in St. Paul. Before her first day of work, she wrote a note card: “Work as if working for the Lord” (Col 3:23). She purposed to live out that verse.

Later, she used her bookkeeping skills to serve at Iowa Christian College. Staff and students went together to Des Moines area churches and enjoyed fellowship events. While attending Rising Sun Church of Christ, Lois caught the eye of a single young man named Kurt Shivers. On a group outing to the movies, Kurt got ahold of Lois’ pocket calendar and wrote in a date. They made reservations for Long John Silvers. On one occasion, Lois asked if Kurt might take a stray cat to stay at the farm. Kurt expressed that he would much rather take her to the farm. They were married on March 15th, 1986.

Joey was born September 20th, 1987. They were only able to have one son, but they spoiled him like he was seven children. Lois homeschooled Joey all the way through graduation. She not only taught him academically, but most importantly she raised him in the knowledge and love of Jesus. They shared many spiritual conversations from scriptures to song lyrics. She loved to sit down at the piano and play songs like “How Great Thou Art” and “Ring The Bells”. She shared her passion for praising the Lord with her son who serves in full time worship ministry. She soaked in every moment she could get with Joey, Kara, and her three precious grandchildren.

She is survived by Kurt Shivers, her devoted husband of 39 years; her son, Joseph (Kara) Shivers; grandchildren, Zoe, Raymond, and Brayden Shivers; brothers, Richard (Sandra) Hanson, Lynn (Marilyn) Hanson, Paul (Danita) Hanson; sister-in-law, Gail; and twenty nieces and nephews.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Bernice; her brothers, Larry, Douglas, and William; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Tucker.

Services will be held at Rising Sun Church of Christ, 6390 NE Rising Sun Drive, Pleasant Hill, Iowa, on Friday, April 18, 2025. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Rising Sun Cemetery. There will be a luncheon at the church following the burial.
