Kelly was born in Hudson, Iowa, on February 22, 1958 to Beatrice Ann Weaver and Wayne Dale Payne. She graduated from Marshalltown High School and then attended Cedarville College in Cedarville, Ohio. There she met her future husband, David Messenger. Kelly then transferred to Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo, Iowa, and graduated as a dental hygienist in 1980. She and David married on July 19, 1980 and lived in Waterloo until relocating to Grand Rapids, Michigan, for David to finish seminary. The couple welcomed their first child, Emily, and moved in 1985 to South Point, Ohio, where David accepted a ministry position. It was there that sons, Brett and Derek, were born and Kelly focused on being a stay-at-home mother. The family moved to the Quad Cities in 1989 where daughter, Aaryn, was born in 1990. Kelly worked as a dental hygienist for Byrum Family Dentistry until the family moved to West Des Moines in 1996. She then worked for Country Club Dental until her retirement in 2020.
Kelly had many talents and interests. She was an excellent pianist, which aided her passion to lead choirs and be part of worship teams throughout her life. She loved helping out with the Valley Marchmasters during all four children’s high school careers. She cherished entertaining and hosting family and friends, always making things special for family gatherings and birthday celebrations. She enjoyed attending concerts, cheering for the Hawkeyes, baking, and cooking.
Kelly was encouraging, personable, kind, funny, goofy, warm, and hospitable. She made a lasting impression on those she connected with and was immensely proud of her family.
She will be greatly missed by her husband, David Messenger; her children, Emily (Jon) Maiers, Brett Messenger, Derek Messenger, and Aaryn (Zach McCombs) Messenger; grandchildren, Brayden Messerschmidt, Gracen Anderson, Vinny Maiers, Roman McCombs, Luca McCombs, and a baby girl on the way; her sisters, Robin (Terry) Anderson, Tracy Oller, Janae (Tim) Jelsma, and Alyson (Mark) Skahill; and numerous nieces and nephews.

My sincere condolences to the Messenger and Payne families. I first met Kelly in 1974 at the Iowa Regular Baptist Camp in Clear Lake were Kelly and I both work during the summer. Kelly was the same age as my sister Gloria who also worked at camp. While I was the younger brother pest many time to my sister, Kelly always welcomed my friendship and was always fun to be with. I believe that it was in 1977, that the Payne family hosted many of the IRBC staff at their home in Marshalltown. The guys downstairs and the girls upstairs. We had a blast! I also remember visiting Kelly, Robin and Tracy when Marshalltown back when the Iowa Baptist churches had Funtastic! Such great memories with the Payne girls. I know that you will miss Kelly greatly but I also know that we will see her again. Your family has been and will continue to be in my prayers. May the great love of God comfort you at this time.
