Kathryn (Kate) Inez Zoss, age 97, passed away on Monday, January 13, 2025, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. She was born the daughter of Obed and Inez (Carlson) Burkgren on April 18, 1927, at the family farm near Dayton, Iowa, and she graduated from Dayton High School in 1945. She married LuVerne Zoss on November 13, 1949, at the Emanuel Lutheran church in Dayton, Iowa.

Kate dedicated her life to raising her six children and supporting her husband, always putting other’s needs ahead of her own. She loved spending time with her family, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her so much joy. She enjoyed baking and playing bridge and other games with friends and neighbors. Her patio door was aways open so she could catch up with neighbors over a cup of coffee. She also enjoyed providing home daycare in Harlan for several years.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons Bruce of Des Moines, Steve of Silver City, Ron (Denise) of Urbandale, Dennis (Cathleen) of Fort Collins, CO; her daughters Becky Deterding (Darrel) of Bassett, NE, Valerie Defenbaugh (Dan) of Altoona; her brother Robert Burkgren, her sister Irma Licht, 11 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband LuVerne, brothers Omar, Marvin, Donald, and Calvin Burkgren, sister Wilma Aspholm, and granddaughter Jessica Zoss.
