Service Details

Kenneth Lee Schade passed away Thursday, December 7, 2023, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 61 due to complications of dementia. Ken was born May 14, 1962, in Des Moines, Iowa to parents, Donald and Patty Schade.

In his younger years he enjoyed fishing with his grandparents, singing in the church choir, working on cars, and working out with his brother-in-law. He enjoyed spending time with his loved ones, especially for the holidays.

He then began his career as a Laboratory Technician at Laboratory of Clinical Medicine for several years. After enjoying working in the lab, an opportunity opened up to go back to school, where he earned his degree in early childhood education from Grandview College. He enjoyed working with the young students and those that needed extra help. He ended his working career as a courier for Quest Diagnostics (formerly LCM). He enjoyed the freedom this position offered and getting to know his clients for 17 years.

Ken married the love of his life in March of 1989, and they enjoyed 35 wonderful years together. Their love continued to grow with each passing year. He loved to play with his three children and enjoyed time with his family, including becoming a grandpa. There were lots of movies, small trips, singing in the car and just being silly together. He enjoyed his hobbies and playing games. There was never any doubt about how much he loved all of his family and friends. HIs smile, words and actions spoke volumes about his character, never leaving anyone a stranger.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents Don and Patty Schade. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife Carla; three children, Ryan (Skye), Brianna (John) and Kevin (Lava); his two sisters Donna (Joe) Zawistowski and Diane Edge; and three grandchildren Joanna, Eli and Jaden Rumbaugh.

We will miss the way he could light up a room, his unique sense of humor and his compassionate nature. Although our family will never quite be the same, we will continue to honor him by carrying on his memories and love of life.

We will celebrate Ken’s life with a visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 14, 2023, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 15, also at Hamilton’s. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery. All are welcome to a luncheon at the funeral home after the graveside committal service.
