Joyce Lutz
June 18, 1938 — September 19, 2024
Joyce Ann Lutz, 86, died September 19, 2024 while under hospice care. She was born June 18, 1938 in Exira Iowa to her parents, Garland and Florence Nelson.
She was an Office Manager/Bookkeeper for many years. Joyce worked at Hiland Potato Chip from 1963-1975. Her children, Vikki, Tamie, and Allen loved it when “Mommy” would bring home fresh potato chips. She then worked at Lumberman’s Wholesale from 1976-1980. Followed by Russ Doughten Films from 1981-2003, where she retired. Joyce later went to work for AZCON in Grimes as a Bookkeeper. AZCON was the perfect fit for her, she loved the people and they loved her. In 2021, Joyce decided it was time to fully retire.
She married John Lutz in 1976. They loved going fishing and camping. They had an old pontoon boat that worked well enough, until one day they were on Saylorville Lake and the boat started taking on water. They made it 50 feet from shore when John jumped out and brought the boat to safety. Joyce (and her hair) survived unscathed.
Joyce had a strong faith in God and loved to read her bible at a special desk in her family room. She took great pride in displaying her angel collection at Christmas time. After retirement, she loved a good garage sale and thrift market. Joyce was always ready to find a good deal! She and Tamie would go “junking” as Joyce called it every Saturday morning for quite a few years. Always ending with breakfast, her favorite being at the Waveland Café. Joyce was a friend to many and always there for the people she loved. Joyce will be deeply missed!
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; siblings, Lois Claassen, Leon Nelson, Jerry Nelson, and Zoe Johnson.
Joyce is survived by her children, Vikki (Rick) Vencil, Tamra (Keith) Mullen, Allen (Cathey) Wright, Martin Lutz, and Timothy (Robin) Lutz; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Family will greet friends on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Memorial service will take place the following day Thursday, September 26, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. also at the funeral home. Tamie, my heart goes out to you for your Mom’s loss. I had no idea you were going through the same thing as I was during this time. As you said, it is hard losing your Mom, so if you want to share your feelings and thoughts of your loss, please get in touch with me, or Teri, Mari, Jean, Dawn. They were there for me and it meant so very much to me to have their support. Our friendships are precious after all these years so we must stay strong. Prayers to you and your family. 🙏

Joyce blessed everyone who met her. She had such a sweet disposition and pleasant demeanor she just attracted people to her and in so doing exhibited her Savior, Jesus. She will be missed deeply by those who knew and loved her.

I appreciated Joyce's years of faithful service as a volunteer with Serve Our Youth Network showing the love of Christ in practical ways to kids at Polk County Youth Services. She touched many, many lives, and we won't know this side of eternity the impact she made, but I am confident that in the warm embrace of her Lord and Savior she heard, "well done, good and faithful servant."
Joyce will be missed. I am so sorry for your loss.
