Jean Marie Cataldo

Jean Marie Cataldo, 92, passed away on October 21, 2023, at Ramsey Village in Des Moines, Iowa.

Jean was born August 14, 1931, in Wayne County, Iowa to Henry and Ida (Ellis) Johnston. She became a devout Catholic before marrying the love of her life, Carl Navio Cataldo on June 10, 1958, in Monterrey, Mexico.

Growing up on a farm taught her the true meaning of hard work by completing chores of milking the cows, collecting eggs, and pitching hay. She loved dogs, especially poodles. She always had dogs in her home and took them with her wherever she went. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, canning, and going to garage sales. She taught herself how to speak Italian and play the piano. She loved telling stories, the color orange, baking Italian food, Cardinals, and Elvis Presley. Above all, she loved the time spent with her grandchildren.

Jean is survived by her children, Carla (Larry) Kelley, Vickie (Don) Stout, Carl H. Cataldo, Gennaro (Merrie) Cataldo, and Carma (Edward) Spitzer; grandchildren, Larry Kelley, Jr., Kayla Miller, Victoria Montz, Megan Duenas, Parker Spitzer, Gennaro M. Cataldo, and Mia Storto; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her devoted husband, Carl Navio Cataldo on September 25, 1996; and siblings, Leslie, Dean, and Larry.
