James "Jim" Zahn

James "Jim" Zahn,78, passed away January 10, 2024, at Iowa Lutheran hospital.

He grew up in Des Moines where he played baseball and eventually met his future wife, Cheryl. He was offered the opportunity to pitch for the Chicago Cubs but instead chose to serve his country as a US Marine. After completing a tour of duty in Vietnam as a radio operator, he returned to Iowa to marry his sweetheart. He worked as an instructor at UEI. He also worked for Automatic Systems for 10 years before making a 30-year career at Des Moines Water Works. He enjoyed spending time with his brothers and played an annual golf tournament with them for many years. Jim will be remembered as a generous all-around guy with a sense of humor.

Jim is survived by his children, Laura Zahn, and Scott (Michelle) Zahn; grandchild, Addison Zahn; his brothers, John (Ramona)Zahn and Christopher (Choon Bee) Zahn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Esula Zahn; his brothers, Paul and Joseph Zahn; and his wife, Cheryl Zahn.

The family will greet friends Thursday, January 18, 2024, from noon to 3:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, with a graveside service to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Kiya Koda Humane Society in Indianola in loving memory of Jim.
