James Patrick Lela, Jr., passed away on December 3, 2024, after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Born on August 14, 1953, in Pineville, Louisiana, Jim was the son of James Patrick Lela, Sr. and Naomi (Young) Lela who have preceded him in death. He was born into the family with siblings, Thomas I. Lela and Morgan Bruce Lela.

Jim spent his formative years in various parts of the Midwest, attending elementary school in South Sioux City, Nebraska, and middle school at Wilson Jr. High in Des Moines, Iowa. He completed his high school education in Metamora, Illinois. These experiences across different communities shaped his adaptable and resourceful nature, qualities that would serve him well in his lifelong career as a handyman.

Settling in Des Moines, Iowa, James devoted his professional life to helping others through his handyman work. With his meticulous attention to detail, he was able to fix almost anything. He would frequently come up with clever ways to solve problems that would never occur to most people. His unique personality and his willingness to lend a helping hand made him a cherished person among family and friends.

Jim is survived by a son, James (Amanda) Lela III of Grimes, many cousins, and several nieces and nephews. Jim was the grandson of Ivan and Mildred Young of Des Moines and Morgan and Mary Baldridge of Peoria, IL, who have preceded him in death. His family and friends will forever cherish the memories of his unique personality, kindness, and humor, he brought into their lives.

His passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him. Per Jim’s request there will be no formal funeral service but a private graveside service. He will be buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.
