James Richard Harn

James R. Harn, 83, peacefully passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2026 in Des Moines, lowa.

Jim was born September 25, 1942 to Richard and Helen (Dills) Harn. After living in lowa, Texas and Oklahoma, he settled in Lincoln, Nebraska. Jim retired after 28 years at the University of Nebraska in the Bob Devaney Sports Center. He loved being a part of the 'team behind the teams' cheering on the players, and supporting the University. Go Big Red!

In retirement, Jim moved to Iowa to be closer to family. He enjoyed volunteering at the West Des Moines Community Center. He loved listening to music and watching movies. Jim took every opportunity to have fun— going to the Nebraska and Iowa State Fairs, parades, zoos, family trips and making videos for his special memories!

He enjoyed sweets, often taking an extra one for later! He had a beautiful smile, infectious laugh and a gentle, fun-loving soul. He had a special bond with dogs, having many as a companion throughout his life. In his later years, he found pure joy in taking trips to the dog park and showering every dog he met with affection.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Susan; nephew, Rick; and nieces, Whitney, Dawn and Valerie. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; stepdad, Tom; sister-in-law, Carole; brother, Jerry; and nephew, Jeffery.

A private family service and burial will take place at a later date.
