John T. Henry, 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at EveryStep Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

John was born November 27, 1944, in Des Moines, Iowa to John W. and Lila (Ewing) Henry. He was a lifelong resident of the Des Moines area. He graduated from Altoona High School, where he excelled in athletics. He married Nancy (Harter) Henry on July 25, 1987, and was employed by John Deere for 30 years, retiring in 2002.

John was a very generous person and very protective of those he cared about. He loved fishing and the outdoors. John was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes, Kansas City Chiefs, and NASCAR fan. He liked watching old westerns and scary movies. John was an expert bowler and took part on many bowling leagues. Above all, John cherished time with his family. They were very important to him.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Nancy Henry; sons, Brian Rubendall (Veronica), Scott Rubendall (Lisa), and Jeremy Henry; step-daughter, Melissa Bailey (Ron); sixteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces, Heidi Tuneberg and Amy Klein-Matheny; mother of his boys, Cheryl Bywaters; as well as many other beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lila Henry; sister, Penny Sue Henry; and his step-son, Buddy Hughes, Jr.

According to John’s wishes, cremation will occur. There will be a celebration of life on Sunday, April 28, 2024, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the AUW Local 450 Union Hall, 4589 NW 6th Drive, Des Moines, IA 50313.
