Joann Gonzales, 85, left an enduring legacy of love and devotion, passing away surrounded by her family on February 1, 2025. Born on February 2, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Ralph and Nelly Hopkins, she was a shining example of resilience and determination. After attending Lincoln High School, she embarked on her first job candling eggs, selflessly supporting her family. Shortly after, she married her soulmate, James A. Gonzales, and together they raised seven remarkable children - five girls and two boys. Joann's unwavering dedication to her family was a beacon of inspiration, and her love for her children and grandchildren knew no bounds. As a homemaker, she nurtured and guided her family with kindness and compassion. Later in life, she pursued a new chapter, working at the Embassy Suites, where her warmth and hospitality touched countless lives. Joann's passions extended beyond her family to include arts and crafts, sewing, and cooking, as well as cherishing time with loved ones, enjoying car rides, sharing stories, and dancing to old country music.

Her legacy lives on through her children: Peggy Gonzales, Emma Gonzales, Donna Gonzales, David Gonzales of Des Moines, IA, and Wanda Gonzales of Creston, IA.

Her beloved grandchildren, James Dawson, Willie Dawson, James Gonzales, Stephanie Gonzales, Matt Gonzales, Michelle Gonzales, Billy Gonzales, Jimmy Gonzales, Tina Gonzales, Jacqueline Gonzales, Kiaira Gonzales, and Amber Flanders, were blessed by her unwavering love and devotion.

She is also survived by a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, who will continue to draw inspiration from her remarkable life.

Though she was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Nelly Hopkins, husband James Gonzales, son Jimmy (Brother) Gonzales, daughter Susy Gonzales, granddaughter Lisa Dawson, great-granddaughter Romonie Gonzales, and sister Bev, along with nine other siblings, her spirit remains, illuminating the lives of all who knew her.
