James M. Carter
July 08, 1946 — January 21, 2025
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our cherished James Michael Carter on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at the VA Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa.
James’ loving attitude and smile brought joy to everyone he met. He always greeted people with a smile and “Hi”, whether he knew them or not. James accepted Jesus Christ later in life and now he is resting in the arms of Our Heavenly Father.
James was born July 8, 1946, one of three children born to Helen Micksell and Kenneth Carter. All have preceded him in death.
James enlisted in the US Navy on July 22, 1963, at a young age. He served a tour in Vietnam, receiving several medals – Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. After completing three years active duty, he enlisted and served three years in the Reserves.
James is survived by his three sons, Jimmy, Gene Americus, and Terrin, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 31, 2025, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, with a luncheon to follow.

Chip and I would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy for Jim and his family. I met Jim about 4 years ago at the veterans home and he always had a smile on his face and greeted everyone with a “hello! How are you?” When he gave his life to Christ I saw that smile grow even bigger! I am sad he is gone from this world but looking forward to seeing that smile in heaven one day! He is in God the Father’s loving arms now. I hope that brings you all peace, as it does me.

He was an amazing person- Ornery at times, but I loved hearing “ Hi Bubba!” when I walked into work. He definitely had a great heart! Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of his life for several years.
