Henry Gertsen

Henry Gertsen, 69, passed away December 12, 2023, at Select Specialty Hospital in Des Moines.

Henry was born January 29, 1954, in Des Moines to Carl and Dolores (Welch) Gertsen. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1972. Henry was a fireman with the Des Moines Fire Department for over 35 years. Above all, he was a family man and loved coaching his kids in softball and baseball. Henry also enjoyed fishing and camping with his fireman buddies. He was an avid reader.

Henry is survived by his son, Henry (Sarah) Gertsen; daughter, Regina Kindig; step-daughter, April Shindelar; step-son, Corey Henderson; grandchildren, Mia, Dominic and Noelle; step-grandchildren, Tyler, Morgan, Hunter and Maddie; two step-great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Andrew Gertsen.

The family will greet friends Friday, December 22, 2023 from 4 pm to 7 pm at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A time of sharing and celebrating Henry’s life will follow at Sam’s Bar & Grill, 3160 8th Street SW in Altoona.
