Henry Bagby, Jr.
September 15, 1946 — December 26, 2023
Henry Louis Bagby, Jr, 77, of Des Moines, Iowa left to join our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 26, 2023. He was born to Henry, Sr and Bessie Bagby on September 15, 1946.
One of the kindest souls on this planet, Henry was a gentle and giving man who worked tirelessly. He faced every challenge in life with admirable strength and courage.
Early in life, Henry learned the importance of hard work and instilled that same work ethic in family. He loved working with the earth. Through his construction companies, Henry built bridges, culverts and many of the main streets that we drive on today. He was a man of strong faith and always emphasized the importance of family, hard work and doing what is right.
Henry loved the world of racing. He raced late models at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, Hamilton County Speedway, Vandalia Speedway, Boone Speedway, Stuart Speedway and Audubon County Speedway.
He also enjoyed watching his brothers, John and Dwight, race.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Henry, Sr and Bessie Bagby, and his brother, Dwight Bagby.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Sherita (Adam) McCollum and Breanna (David) Thacker; granddaughter, Alaina; six brothers and sisters, Arthur, Juanita, Cynthia, David, Sandy and John; a host of nieces and nephews; and many other extended family members and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Henry.
The family would like to thank each and every person for honoring Henry’s memory with all of the love, prayers and kind words they have received. Henry will be deeply missed.

We regret with sadness, the news of Henry's passing. Henry was a loving gentle giant that always treated my family well. He was well known in the racing community and I was always proud to mention to Iowa racing fans that my cousin and his brothers owned raced cars. I remember a few times the guys I spoke to shared a respect for their skill & commitment to racing. We express our deepest condolences to all those close to Henry and regret our absence at the funeral to support the family & friends in person. Rest in peace Henry; we look forward to seeing you in the Kingdom of God.

Henry was a dear neighbor in West Des Moines. A fond memory was going to the Des Moines fairgrounds to watch him race, first and only time to see racing. RIP Henry and prayers for your family.
