Helen Hill

Helen Amelia Hill, 87, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

She was born March 13, 1936 in Yankton, South Dakota to her parents, Ernest and Mabel Schmidt. Helen attended Yankton Public Schools. She met Norman Hill at the age of 15 and quickly fell in love. They were married on September 20, 1952 in Crofton, Nebraska. She often shared that the happiest time of her life was staying home caring for her home and family. At the age of 52, Helen started working for the Iowa Health System in the nursery and children’s health center. She loved baking, cooking, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren. Helen’s greatest joy was her husband, children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Norman Hill; children, Jerry (significant other, Becky Morris) Hill, Steve (Pam) Hill, Scott (Diane) Hill, and Cheryl (Bruce) Gilbert; grandchildren, Scott McGhee, Andy McGhee, Bryan McGhee, Joanna Hill, Ben Hill, Toby Hill, Jeremy Hill, Brad Hill, Josh Hill, Tim Hill, Jason Hill, Nicole Palmer, Tucker Gilbert, Hunter Gilbert, and Kesley Auer; honorary granddaughter, Karen McGhee; siblings, Ernestine (Charles) Merchant, Frederick (Marlene) Schmidt, Joe (Ardith) Schmidt, and James (Pat) Schmidt; and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda McGhee; parents, Mabel and Ernest Schmidt; siblings, Viola Butrick, Loyd Gilbertson, Jean (James) Briggs, Frieda (Guy) Warnock, and Eugene Schmidt.

Family will greet friends Monday, February 19, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW in Altoona. A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. at the funeral home with interment to follow at Lowman Cemetery, 11190 SE 56th Avenue in Runnells.
