Harry E. "Gene" Sowder
January 18, 1958 — November 05, 2023
Harry Eugene Sowder, 65, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, November 5, 2023. He was born January 18, 1958, in Astoria, Oregon to Dale M Sowder and LaVerda Sowder Lockard (James).
After leaving Oregon he moved to Altoona, Iowa where he attended and graduated from Southeast Polk High School. Gene loved being an athlete where he lettered in several sports in high school, but his one passion came shortly after where he was a second-degree black belt in Tai Kwon Do. Gene was always an avid outdoorsman along with being quite the ladies’ man. He worked mainly in construction before working a warehouse job before retiring.
Gene is survived by his mother, LaVerda Lockard of Waukee; brothers, Dale of Nevada, IA, Bill (Nela) of Altoona, IA, and Terry (Terri) of Sandia, TX; and sister, DeeDee (Wes) of Waukee, IA.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dale Sowder; grandmother, Cloie Sowder (with whom he had a very special bond); and sister, Cindy Rinehart.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the American Legion Hall, 315 2nd Street, in Bondurant.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Gene.

Gene and I met in 1986 at Denny Arthur's nightclub on Halloween night. I remember that cause he was dressed like one of the musicians from KISS. He loved to dance. He was working at Iowa Beef Steakhouse at that time. We eventually got married and stayed together until 2002.
It was my pleasure being a part of his life. I will miss you Gene.

I met Gene at Iowa Beef Steakhouse. He was such a fun guy to work with and hangout with. I have thought about him a lot over the years. Rest in peace friend. Condolences to his family.

Gene was one of my life long friends. We met in Tae kwon do and went to several tournaments together around the midwest in the 80's. I just had taken him to the eye clinic a couple weeks ago to prepare him for cataract surgury. We were able to spend a little time together that day and had nice conversation about life and he was in a good spirited mood.
I remember taking Gene home never knowing it would be the last time I got to see him.
I will miss you very much !
God have mercy on your soul Geno
