George "Sam" Buck
April 27, 1930 — August 07, 2024
George Samuel Buck, fondly known as "Sam," passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at the age of 94. He was surrounded by his loving son, Howard, and daughter, Samia, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Sam was born on April 27, 1930, to Everett and Edna (Bright) Buck in Mount Ayr, Iowa. He grew up with a strong sense of duty and patriotism, which led him to serve his country proudly during the Korean War. In recognition of his heroic actions and gallantry, Sam was awarded the Silver Star, an honor bestowed upon him 50 years after his service.
On October 8, 1952, Sam married Patricia (Hoops). Their union was blessed with two children, Samia, born in 1954 while Sam was recovering from his war injuries at the Army Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Howard, born in 1960.
After his military service, Sam pursued his education at Iowa State University, where he earned a degree in Farm Operations. He later advanced his education, receiving a Master's in Banking from the University of Wisconsin. His career took him through roles at the USDA and private banking, where he made significant contributions with his knowledge and expertise.
Sam will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his charismatic personality and captivating smile. He was always willing to offer advice and lend a helping hand to those in need. As a proud founding member of the Outpost Harry Survivors Association and a life member of the VFW, Sam's legacy of service and camaraderie will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Sam's passions extended beyond his professional and military life. He had a deep love for his family, polka music, fishing, and any social gathering where he could engage with others. His fondness for sweet treats was well-known among family and friends.
He is survived by his son, Howard Buck; daughter, Samia (Randel) Wahlert; six grandchildren, Andrew (Amber) Apple, Nicholas (Lindsay) Apple, Megan (Doug) Corson, Jacob (Danielle) Buck, Kaitlyn Buck and Dustin (McKinzie) Johnston; and six great-grandchildren, Taylor and Jack Corson, Aubrey, Camyden, and Emery Buck, and Ruger Apple. He is also survived by his siblings, Janice (Jerry) Rollins, MaryJane (Russ) Henry, and Everett Buck Jr.

I met Sam in 1984, at a meeting for farmers losing money on their farm. He recognized my love of farmers and farming. He gave me the best advise I could have gotten.
After laying out all of my farms financial information and showing him how I was going broke. He told me I was on the wrong side of our table. I needed to come and work for him in the FmHA. He got me an application and after sending it to the DC National Office, he called me saying that the Osceola Office needed me. And could I start next week.
That's how I met Sam. After 18+ years I heard his story, road in his car and learned about life. And then I got to grow old with Him.
Sam did much for me, and with me. He left his mark on me. As, I'm certain he did on many!!
I want to thank you for lending him to me. I'm so sorry for you loss. He loved his family as he told many tails as we sat in our St Louis motel waiting for our class the next day.
Sam was adventure!! May you keep him close to your heart and love your families as he truly loved you.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I worked for Sam for a couple years at USDA in the late 1970's. He was such a wonderful man to work for. He taught me a lot about how to do my job and more importantly how to be a good friend. His positive look on life was such a wonderful example to me.

Sam was a wonderful light in the life of anyone who knew him. I worked with Sam at USDA and always appreciated his wit, his common sense and the charm he wrapped around everyone. When Sam finally shared with us what his experience was like at the outpost in Korea. It certainly sent chills down our arms. Hearing the story helped to make sense of what was important to Sam and why - relationships, negotiating opposite sides to the middle, family, being joyful, and enjoying a good joke. Sam will be missed, but I'm sure he's entertaining everybody in heaven.

I am glad I got to meet Sam a couple times and chat with him now and then. It helped me piece together details of a very harrowing day he and my father shared a long time ago. I am glad he was blessed with a long and productive life. Best wishes to you all.

It was truly an honor and privilege for our staff at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown to care for Sam during the last years of his life. What a special man he was. Sam was one of only two silver star recipients among the 396 residents living at the Iowa Veterans Home. Sam is a great example of how to live one’s life - pleasant, kind, and enjoying those around him. Samia & Howard were frequent visitors to Marshalltown; Sam was fortunate to have both of you in his corner. Blessings to the Buck family on the loss of your patriarch. And may we all be a little bit more like Sam in the way we live our lives. Salute! - to a life well lived.
