Service Details

Glenda “Kay” Johnson, age 71, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024.

Kay was born December 10, 1952, in Ames, Iowa to Edwin and Verladene (Hull) Mains. She was one of eleven children (Brenda, Randy, Hazel, Paula, Marla, Mike, Carol, Peggy, Bruce, and Jon). She graduated from North High School in Des Moines. She earned a degree in clerical skills from business school. She went on to try out cosmetology for hair, but continued to work in several different offices doing clerical work. She found her happiness in taking care of the sick working at the VA Hospital as a housekeeper for over ten years. She believed that veterans and the elderly deserve to be taken care of in their time of need.

Kay enjoyed fellowshipping with everyone about the Lord and reading her Bible. She was known for her prayer and her advice. She believed in treating everyone with love and respect. She loved working in the community with the homeless and volunteered time with her church. She loved sewing until she couldn’t anymore. She enjoyed watching old TV programs and movies. Her favorite pastime was talking on the phone to friends and family (sometimes to more than one person). She was always a call away, no matter what time it was. Everything she did, she did with compassion and love. Kay and her husband, Don would go fishing whenever they could steal a moment to go. Kay’s energy would fill a room with so much light. She was a pure soul that will always be remembered.

She is survived by her daughter, Angelia Duff (Curtis) and grandchildren, Karisha, LaTron, and Antonio; son, John Duff and grandchildren, Alexis, Kiley, Dustin, Tanner, and Victoria; son, Wesley Johnson and grandchildren, Wesley, LaTasha, Demetreus, Shyreka, Alexis, Kiley, Tachaye, Alenna, Jordan, Justin, Jessamyn and Aubree; and daughter, Angelique Johnson and grandchildren, Desiree, Chenee and Jahron. Kay is also survived by five sisters, four brothers, and many nieces and nephews, as well great-nieces and nephews.

Kay was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her parents, Verladene and Edwin Mains; and her sister, Hazel Flannery.
