Eugene "Gene" John Ramirez

Gene Ramirez, 87 passed away on November 14, 2023, at Trinity Center at Luther Park.
Gene was born on February 29, 1936, in Des Moines, Iowa. He lived in Valley Junction until he married Dolores and moved to the east side of Des Moines. His employment began as an insurance agent, at Water Works and then Firestone. He umpired in the city of Des Moines for many years.
He enjoyed golf, coaching, and fishing. He loved going to Prairie Meadows, the Union Hall on the southside, and the Southside Senior Center to hang out with his friends. As a family, they enjoyed vacationing in places like Lake Okoboji, South Dakota, Worlds of Fun, Hawaii, and Arizona. Above all, he loved family gatherings during the holidays surrounded by his big family.
Gene is survived by his children, Tony Ramirez, Kathy (Mike) O’Hara, Dianne Ramirez, Steve Ramirez, Julie Luncsford, and Denise (Matt) Maifield; grandchildren, Justin (Shannon) O’Hara, Heather (David) Oathout, Anthony (Shelby) Cross, Maria (German Veleta) Cross, Josh (Kristina) Williams, Sean (Vanessa Morales) Luncsford, Ashlyn, Chase, and Davis; great-grandchildren, Terrance Oathout, Rylee Oathout, Antonio Cross, Angelina Silva, Luis Veleta, Savannah Cross, Lydia Veleta, Victoria Williams, Ariella Luncsford, and Angelo Luncsford; sister, Mary Van Horne; brother-in-law, Dave (Barb) Chase; sister-in-law, Carol Ramirez; and many other loving family members and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Dolores Ramirez; brothers, Richard Ramirez and Edward (Mary) Ramirez; and brothers-in-law, Jerry Van Horne and Paul Chase.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 20, 2023, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street with a vigil to begin at 3:30 p.m. Gene will be laid to rest at Glendale cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Gene.

So sorry to hear about Gene. We had a group of guys who played golf and Gene was a regular . Gene was quite a character! We had many great times together and he was a wonderful friend . My condolences to his family . He joked about having the quickest swing in the west . REST IN PEACE GENO . We will miss you.

I'm sorry for your loss, such a kind man. I have fond memories of Gene being my absolute favorite umpire when I played softball for Dowling. May he rest in peace.
