Service Details

Eric Warren Shaffer, 54, of Waukee, Iowa, died at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa on March 15, 2024. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM Friday, March 22, 2024 at Valley Church, 4343 Fuller Road in West Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be held the next day, Saturday, March 23rd at 11 AM also at Valley Church.

Eric was born at Fort Benning, Georgia, on September 26, 1969, to Jamie “Jim” and Joyce Shaffer. The family of three soon settled back in Iowa. Eric was thrilled to add a new brother to the family with the birth of John in 1974.

Eric never met a stranger and always built a community wherever he was. Whether it was in his neighborhood, Aloha Maryland Pike; school, Smouse and Ruby Van Meter; at work, Link Associates, where he most enjoyed working at their Casey’s; and at Valley Church, where you can find “Eric’s Place,” an inclusive playground.

Eric loved Kenny Rogers, Batman, a good slice of Chuck’s pizza, Uno, bowling, going to the movies, participating in the Special Olympics (often bringing home a medal), onion rings, Spider-Man, supporting our first responders, monster trucks, a backyard game of bocce ball, and trips to Kauai. Most of all, Eric loved his family and friends,

Eric is lovingly remembered by his brother, John; his Godparents, Warren and Sue Puck; his childhood friend, Carol (Jewett) Smith; his longtime family friends, Dick, Steve, Kim, Matt, Erin, and kids; Sergeant Mark McKinney and the extended McKinney family; his caretaker and friend, Carmen; the Herman family; his housemates; his very best friend, David; extended family and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Joyce.

A special thank you to Link Associates for all the care and love you have shown Eric through the years.

Memorial contributions may be directed towards Eric’s Place at Valley Community Center in West Des Moines.
