Elizabeth Ann Isaacson
August 27, 1933 — September 03, 2024
Elizabeth Isaacson passed away September 3, 2024 at her home in West Des Moines, IA.
Elizabeth Ann Fenton was born August 27, 1933 in Numa, Iowa to Beth and Raymond Fenton. She was preceded in death by her only sibling, her brother Ray.
Her family moved to Des Moines in the 1940's where Liz completed her public schooling, having met her future husband Max at North High. While at North she became a drum majorette and also a member of a rope jumping team, which became-nationally known, and even enjoyed an appearance on national TV.
Max quickly thought she was the most beautiful girl in the school which led to marriage in 1954. They were the first couple married in Windsor United Methodist church and continued to be actively involved throughout their life. They recently celebrated their 70th anniversary.
Liz became a loving mom to three boys and one girl: Scott, Susan, Steven and Stuart. Max was proud to call her his wife. She was a perfect traveling companion as they visited 93 foreign countries during their marriage.
Liz worked for the Iowa legislature for more than 30 years and received a national award for her outstanding service as Chief Clerk of the Iowa House of Representatives. She was respected by both major political parties.
In 1987 they purchased a summer home in Clear Lake, IA. The lake house was always Liz's “happy place”. She enjoyed tending to her flowers, boating, and sharing the home with family and friends.
Liz volunteered weekly at Meals from the Heartland, helped on numerous political campaigns, served as Cub Scout and Camp Fire Girl leader for her children's activities, was a faithful spectator at all her grandchildren's sporting events, and was an avid Cyclone fan.
Liz had a huge circle of friends: co-workers at the Capitol, the mall walker group, her weekly “Dominoes Dames”, church friends, and her newest dear friends at Grand Living where they moved three years ago. We have been honored by all the kind words we've received from everyone about her. She will be greatly missed.
Liz is survived by her husband, Max; her four children, Scott, Sue (Mike) Harmon, Steve (Carol), and Stuart (Tracy); nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Barb Fenton Clatt.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at Windsor United Methodist Church, 6222 University Avenue in Des Moines with visitation from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior. Burial will follow at 9:30 a.m. Friday, September 13, 2024 Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, IA.
Memorials may be directed to the Parkinson’s Foundation, Meals from the Heartland, or Windsor United Methodist Church.

Sue and family, it is with great sadness that I write this. I am glad that we had time together to talk about your mom as she was preparing to leave this earth to be with her Heavenly Father. I will always have fond memories of Liz and how she and your family took me in for Christmas and made me feel so loved and wanted. I loved seeing her at my own mother's memorial in 2022. The world has lost a most "Awesome" woman! Fly high, Liz!

Sincere condolences to Max and family. Liz was a mentor and friend for 30+ years with her in the House and me in the Senate. We had several wonderful trips with ASLCS over those years. I will always remember her laugh which could lift me up even after a 20 hour workday towards the end of Session. She was a truly good person and the world is a sadder place without her.

Max and Family ... I am saddened to learn of Liz' passing. When Liz worked in the House of Representatives and I worked in the State Senate 50 years ago we became great friends -- a friendship that lasted for years. She will be missed.
