Edward D. Allen
November 16, 1946 — September 07, 2025
Who was that baby who rocked his crib so hard that it scooted across the room, and who was that toddler who disappeared from his yard and scared his mom until she found him riding in circles on a choo-choo train in the Town Square of Fairfield, Iowa? It was little Eddie Allen!
Edward D. Allen was born to Raymond D. Allen and Mary Lou (Jared) Allen on November 16, 1946. His brother, Bruce, joined his family some five years later. Ed spent most of his life in Des Moines, Iowa, where he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1965. He served in the Army National Guard for six years and after graduating from Drake University, he began his career in the insurance industry.
He met and then married his wife, Mary (Krull) Allen. To this union, he was blessed with twin daughters, Kellie (Wade) Wessels and Kara Allen. He was also blessed with three grandchildren: Charlize Wessels, Brayden and Lane Schneider. His children and grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life.
After his retirement, Ed volunteered for Life Serve where he picked up and delivered blood donations. He also provided transportation to those in need of getting to and from doctor appointments. Ed and Mary also did some traveling and spent several winters in Scottsdale until he was no longer able to do so. He always enjoyed a round of golf with his buddies, and one of his favorite places to go was on his annual fishing trip to Cass Lake with many great friends. His lap was always open to at least four dogs who loved him dearly and he always enjoyed attending all of his grandchildren‘s activities. A loyal ISU Cyclone until the end, Ed was listening on Saturday, September 6, 2025 as the Cyclones brought home one last win against the Hawkeyes for him.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, a sister-in-law; and several brothers-in-law, aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary; his daughter, Kellie and son-in-law, Wade Wessels; his daughter, Kara Allen; and his grandchildren, Charlie, Brayden, and Lane; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; cousins; nephews and nieces; the outlaws B&Z; and many good and loyal friends.
Ed left this world in the loving arms of Jesus in the early morning hours of Sunday, September 7, 2025. Our lives have been forever changed and we will carry him in our hearts forever. In true Ed style, an open house Celebration of Life will be held from 2 PM to 5 PM on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at Rookies Sports Bar, 2180 NW 156th Street in Clive, IA. Come join us for a tailgate-style Celebration of Life. TVs will be on for the ISU/AZ game and the Iowa/Indiana game. Cyclone and Drake University attire is encouraged. AMF.

So many great memories. I worked with Ed for many years and we frequently traveled on business together. A lot of dinners and golf outings over the years. On a trip to Sacramento, I had the pleasure of introducing Ed to my parents who hosted us for dinner and a swim. As everyone did, they really liked Ed. It was fun talking sports with Ed and sharing stories about his twin girls and my twin boys as they grew up. At work, Ed was a terrific colleague and master problem-solver. Whether at work or at play, Ed was always a joy to be around. To Mary, Kara and Kellie, my deepest condolences.

Such wonderful memories of working with Ed at Central Life for many years! I specifically recall an agency visit he and I made many years ago to the Godfrey’s in Ohio, where he wisely cautioned me to not try to “keep up with the Bills”. He was a joy to know. My deepest condolences.

Mary, Kara and Kellie, my heart is breaking for you. He loved all of you and spoke with so much pride when talking about your kids. Mary, you were the best wife to Ed until his last day. Never doubt that. Ed was a big part of our life. We will miss him until our dying day. I know he will be greatly missed by all of his friends.
Rest in Peace Eddie. I knew the ISU victory was for you. Congratulations. In true form of our friendship, I will wear my Hawkeye gear to your celebration. Don’t worry about Mary we will all make sure she is okay. G
