Stanford (Stan) Spencer, 86, of Des Moines, passed away April 8, 2022, at Sunny View Care Center, Ankeny.
Emily Ann Spencer, 80, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at Harmony Nursing Home in West Des Moines.
Stan was born March 10, 1936, to Bryce and Freeda (Taylor) Spencer of Afton, Ia. He attended school in Afton.
Emily was born December 15, 1943, in Creston, Iowa to Clarence and Arlene (Wegner) Broeker.
On December 13, 1965, Emily married Stan Spencer, and in 1967 they moved into their home in Des Moines. Stan started his own business, Esquire Motors. Once in Des Moines, Emily started working for Look Magazine. She then worked for Massey Ferguson and eventually DLL Financial (Agricredit Company), which is where she retired from. In 1985, Stan purchased a bar in Des Moines (Stan’s Place) which Emily co-owned, and they operated for 33 years.
Stan was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball and NASCAR racing. He also enjoyed playing pool, when he won. Emily loved playing slow-pitch softball in her younger years, and was on a bowling league in Ankeny. She also participated in a pool league through their bar, Stan’s Place.
They are survived by their daughter, Lynn (Mike) Wheeler of California; grandson Mickenzie of Michigan; sister-in-law Gretchen Spencer; nephew Bryce Spencer; niece Renee Stewart and her two sons, Travis and Matthew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother R.B. Spencer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Arlene Broeker; sister, Alice Reikofski.
Celebration of Life Memorial Services will be 1:30 p.m. October 5, 2024, at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Pastor William Richardson will officiate. The burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton. Open memorial visitation with family receiving friends will be from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. service time at Powers Funeral Home in Afton.

I had the pleasure of working with Emily at DLL. She was absolutely one of the best people I had the pleasure to work with. She will be missed.
