Edward D. Payne
November 21, 1951 — December 22, 2024
Edward Dean Payne, age 73, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 22, 2024, in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by family.
Ed was born November 21, 1951, in Des Moines, Iowa to Wilbur Glen Payne and Ruth Frances (Bosley) Payne. He was a graduate of Chariton High School and attended Southwest Baptist University. His career was varied. He began in the banking industry working for United Federal Savings and Loan, working his way up to Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager, and for Midland Savings Bank, also as Branch Manager. He transitioned to IT in the early 1990s, working for the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research in their computer department, and was employed by Hamilton’s Funeral Home in their IT Department until his retirement in 2017. He loved computers and enjoyed them in his free time as well. During this time, he was also Editor for a small Christian magazine.
Ed met Linda Sue (Walker) in late 1996. Their relationship flourished and they were blessed with 26 ½ years of marriage, children, grandchildren, and many years of contentment. Ed was a wonderful and caring husband, father, and grandfather.
Ed was a longtime member of Berean Church and dedicated himself to his church family for the past 28 years. His faith was a driving force in his life and he served as interim choir director, Sunday school teacher, and Engineer of the Berean Express. Ed loved trains and had a dream of constructing an elaborate model train set. Prior to his membership at Berean, Ed served as Pastor at Christian Union Church for 15+ years and helped start many other churches. He cared for children deeply and was involved in the nursery and child care programs through the church.
Ed had a deep love for music. He enjoyed attending concerts with Linda and had a beautiful singing voice. Whenever things became difficult and Ed felt the struggles of life, the Booth Brothers music always calmed him. Ed had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh.
Ed played basketball when he was younger and refereed community rec center basketball games. He was a deceptively quick player. Ed loved ping pong and would play recreationally and would challenge anyone to a game. He would hold tournaments with friends and challenge his daughter, Allison to games. Ed was highly competitive in all areas of his life. He enjoyed playing Scrabble with Linda, UNO with his daughter, Sarah, and video games and wrestling with his grandsons. He was a stickler for rules and could not abide cheating. No one could play a new game until the rules were read cover to cover. He was firm in his beliefs and convictions, and had more integrity than anyone. He was a consistent person in all aspects of his life.
Ed is survived by his wife, Linda Payne; daughters, Sarah Payne and Allison (Chevas) Mingo; granddaughter, Emma Mingo; grandsons, Drake and Joshua Mingo; step son, Randy Helt (fiancé, Danielle Myers); grandchildren, Kyler Davidson and Madison Helt; niece, Kathleen Pendleton; and great-nephews, David Sloan and Jackson Chandler.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Ruth Payne; sister, Virginia Rinard; niece, Delila Chandler; and great-nephew, Christopher Chandler.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by funeral service at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 28, 2024, at Berean Church 5299 E University Avenue, Pleasant Hill, Iowa.

Dad,
You are missed so much. This world feels so empty without you in it. Word cannot express how much I love you and how proud I am to be your daughter. You are one of a kind and I will forever look to you as an example of the kind of person I want to be in all areas of my life. I promise to take care of your beloved Linda as best I can. I'll see you again someday, Dad. I love you.

Linda,
I am saddened to see that my friend died. We worked together for many years at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, and Ed was loved by all who knew him. Please know that I am praying for you and your family during this difficult time.
