Dwight Edward Gaines, Sr.

Dwight E. Gaines Sr. of Waukee, Iowa passed away unexpectedly at MercyOne West Medical Center on December 30, 2024 at the age of 75.

Dwight Sr. was born on September 23, 1949 to Claudette (Daye) and William “Hollis” Gaines in Des Moines, IA. He graduated from Des Moines North High School and later obtained his
Bachelor’s degree from Drake University. Dwight Sr. was a man who deeply valued family unity, always putting his family first. He was a passionate and dedicated athlete growing up and
instilled that passion into his children and grandchildren. He was a devoted father and grandfather who took great pride in his family's accomplishments. His love for the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Bears was second to none!

Dwight Sr. leaves behind a legacy of love and family devotion; he is survived by his wife, Jessica Gaines of Waukee; son, Dwight Jr. (Tammy) of Waukee; grandchildren, Anthony Thompson Jr. (Holly) of Adel, Tyler Thompson (Mariah) of Le Sueur, MN, Gabrielle Gaines of Waukee, Zachary Gaines of Waukee, and Trey Thompson of Waukee; great-grandkids, Bently, Mackenzie, and Aiden of Le Sueur, MN, and Callum of Adel; adored cousin, Anthony Turner (Brian) of Staten Island, NY; sister-in-law, Caroline Robinson; brothers-in-law, Charles, Mike, and Mark May; and many other cherished family and friends.

Dwight Sr. was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Robert and Margaret May; daughters, Deanna Gaines Allen and Danielle Gaines; siblings, William, Pamela, Wayne “Lonnie”, Mitchell and Craig; and brother-in-law, Robert May.

A visitation will be held on January 11, 2025 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA.
