Dear Sharon, Sue, Andy, and the entire Young clan,
I know I speak for the entire Van Hook family when I express our sincere condolences at Don's passing.
Though I am sad, I am also overjoyed at the wonderful memories our families shared
together so many years ago.
Sharon, you and Don have
always been dear friends to my parents and I have thought fondly over the past week of
the many times I got to hang
out with the cool big kid, Andy! (Sue was so cool as to be
almost unapproachable!)
One of my fondest memories of Don is when we went to a University of Iowa football
game and he taught me all
about Kinnock stadium and its
namesake, who devoted
his Heisman trophy
acceptance speech in
1940/41 to a plea for our
country to abandon
isolationism and confront
Hitler.
With fond memories of our time together, we send our love and sympathy.

Dear Sharon, Susan, Andrew, Elna, and family of Donald Burton Young:
On behalf of our family, Betty and I would like to extend our most sincere condolences to each of you at the passing of a good friend and fellow believer Donald Young. As is often said, time seems to pass all too quickly, and it’s hard to believe that 39 years ago, Don and Sharon became members of First Baptist Church. Together, we have sat in our church pews, participated in adult Sunday, school classes, Wednesday night fellowship, and a whole bunch of fun events and activities that have been associated with FBC down through the years.
Betty and I can think of a few people in our church that were more sincere or more enjoyable to be around than Don and Sharon. Don always had such a sense of humor and asked such wonderful questions, probably due to his training as a lawyer and man of words. As you may recall, I frequently referred to Don as the Barrister and Sharon as the Authorist as they were such a well matched loving and talented couple.
We know that you will miss Don and his wonderful personality a great deal, but rest assured, that our thoughts and prayers will be with each of you in the days and months that lie ahead. One thing for certain, you know where Don is today… he is sitting in heaven and smiling down upon us all.

Sharon and family,
I had the privilege of working with Don as my manager at Norwest Bank in Sioux City and for many year as a fellow manager at Norwest. More significantly, Don and Sharon were great friends and mentors to me over the years. Don, first and foremost, loved working with people and adhering to his faith in God as a guiding principle in his daily encounters with people. He was kind, patient, humble and thoughtful in all he did. I am thankful for having Don in my life. He was a great role model and friend. May God rest his soul.

Don was a gem of a human being, such a bright reflection of Jesus. I have missed crossing paths with him since I left First Baptist and am disappointed that I won't be able to pay my respects at his service on Friday. My heart and prayers are with Sharon and all their loved ones who are grieving. God be with you and, Don, until we meet again, you will be missed.
God bless,
Pastor Emily
