Donald K. Schade

Donald K. Schade passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at the age of 91. He was born on October 15, 1931, in Sac City, Iowa, and moved to Des Moines when he was 19 years old (and then resided there the rest of his life). He got a job at Firestone, and met and married the love of his life, Patty, in 1952. (They had three children.) Don worked at Firestone for 35 years, retired, then was asked to come back briefly to set up a machine and was there an additional 8 years.

In his younger days he enjoyed golfing, fishing, and gardening. In his later years, Don was a constant morning patron at McDonald’s where he gathered for breakfast and chats. He was also a daily visitor at Northside Senior Center for lunch, shooting pool, and playing Dominoes with his buddies. Don was a devoted husband and father.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Patty, two sisters, and his parents, Earnest and Enola Schade. Those left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Donna (Joe) Zawistowski and Diane Edge; son, Kenneth (Carla) Schade; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 13, 2023, also at Hamilton’s. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery. There will be a luncheon at the funeral home after the graveside committal service.

Don will be missed dearly by all!
