Dixie L. Jeffries
July 20, 1943 — January 24, 2024
Dixie L. Jeffries, 80, of Des Moines, IA, died unexpectedly in her sleep on January 24, 2024. Per her wishes, she was cremated and a graveside service will be held at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 3, 2024, when hopefully the weather will allow her friends to gather and share stories.
Dixie, born July 20, 1943, was the loving daughter of John and Dorothy (Callahan) Jeffries. She graduated in June 1961 from Lincoln High School in Des Moines, remained a proud alum throughout her life, and enjoyed helping plan her class reunions and class lunches. Dixie worked 11 years for the manager of the Flemming Building, and retired in December 2010 after 38 years as a legal secretary at the law firm of Ahlers & Cooney, P.C.
After retirement, Dixie traveled worldwide (visiting 27 countries and 47 states in all) and enjoyed photography. Dixie also spent her time caring for and sharing meals and laughter with her many friends.
As one of her friends shared after learning of her passing, “Dixie lived her life as the very definition of ‘friendship’. What a wonderful place the world would be, if everyone lived their life as Dixie did.”
Dixie is survived by cousins Lynette VanNote, Altoona, IA, Mary O’Brien, Pleasant Hill, IA, and Tom Callahan, Henderson, NV, along with their families and many wonderful friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the “Abraham Lincoln High School Alumni foundation, as administrator of the Dixie L. Jeffries Memorial Scholarship (Des Moines, Iowa).” Donations can be made online click here or mailed to ALHS Alumni Foundation, P. O. Box 36624, Des Moines, IA 50315.

Dixie and I were next door neighbors on Davis Ave. for years and we walked to school together each morning. I remember us walking up Davis and she and her mom would exchange waves all the way until we turned on SW Ninth; her mom and dad were so loving and caring and she was so thoughtful and kind to them. She and I stayed in touch through the years. Dixie was such a delightful woman; I found comfort in her passing peacefully in her sleep.

Dixie
She was one of a kind, so special and so sweet! Our last luncheon that we had was in October there was just eight of us there, it was probably one time we did not get a picture of our group. How ironic that we would not have done that!
I was telling Dixie that day that I had a dream that she did not want to plan the luncheon or reunions anymore, Im just tired of it!
Her reply, of course, NO, That was just a bad dream! I love doing this and she did it so well.
Im sure there will be many people at her Memorial to Celebrate her last reunion!
May she soar with the angels.

Dixie and I traveled the world together and was not only a friend but was part of our family. We are heartbroken but are happy she didnt suffer. Our Thanksgiving table will feel empty without her. May her memory be for a blessing to all who loved her.

You could look a long long time and never find a nicer, warmer, sweeter, kinder, friendlier person ever. We always hugged when we ran into each other. Because she cared so much for others she was great at planning and organizing. Dixie will be missed by so many and grateful that if we had to lose her she went peacefully with no suffering.
